The History

Although this beverage originated in India, tea was originally only consumed on the subcontinent for medicinal purposes, in spite of the abundance of wild tea that grew all across India.

Tea was popularised by the British East India Company, who encouraged Indian workers to take tea breaks in order to promote the cultivation and sale of tea leaves. A lot of vendors started adding their own herbs and spices to tea, deriving from the more traditional cuppa that is popular in the British Isles.

The result of this was the creation of Masala Chai, or spiced tea. Since then, the popularity of Chai tea has exploded in the West, being picked up by large coffee chains due to its delicious flavour which has cemented its place in coffee shop culture around the world.
