Oranges spread from their native habitat in the tropical regions of Asia to India and the east coast of Africa and from there to the eastern Mediterranean area. The Roman conquests, the advance of Arab trade routes, and the growth of Islam contributed drastically to this distribution of the orange fruit. By the time Christopher Columbus sailed, orange trees were very popular in the Canary Islands.
