Background

Something about the taste of childhood sweets can transport you instantly back to your younger years with the long, summer days that seemed to stretch out in front of you forever. The French sweets Fraise Tagada are the perfect example of how a sweet can become an iconic symbol and since the Haribo company developed them in 1969 they have been hugely popular in France, with one billion sold every year. Strawberry bon bon syrup captures the sweet, scented flavour of fraise tagada, making it the perfect way to add a taste of childhood to any drink or dessert.

Super Strawberries

Its easy to see why strawberries are a popular flavouring for sweets they are popular the world over for their deliciously fragrant sweetness and their bright red colour and pink inner flesh. They have been popular since the ancient Romans, but they have been cultivated since the 14th century by people who recognised the potential these naturally sweet fruit have.

There are hundreds of ways to eat strawberries and they have been a favourite amongst confectioners for hundreds of years. Since the idea of making sweets was first conceived, the idea of flavouring them with fruit and other naturally sweet ingredients has been popular, with strawberries featuring heavily at the top of the list.

From boiled sweets to fruit gums, jelly beans to liquorice, strawberry has always been a popular choice to flavour sweet treats with some adventurous types adding them to chicken dishes, salsas and even pizzas to ensure that they get a strawberry hit whenever they possibly can.

Even astronauts faltered at the idea of launching themselves into space without the chance to eat strawberries while they were away. Those on board for some of the earlier space missions were given dehydrated strawberry cereal cubes to munch on board to give them a familiar taste of home while they were pushing the boundaries of human exploration.

Sweet Strawberry Bon Bons

You would be hard-pressed to find someone who hasnt tried one of these sumptuously sweet strawberry sweets. The light, fluffy, strawberry-flavoured foam is covered in fine, pink-coloured sugar which adds a slight crunch to the outside. These sweets are so popular, particularly in France,  that they can be found in some of the most unexpected places.

In Paris, the super sleek and stylish tea-room at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs is decorated in elegant black and white geometric designs. They serve cream teas which come with a plate of fraise tagada to remind patrons that their tastes may not have changed as much as they might think, despite their sophisticated surroundings.

These sweets are so embedded in the French psyche that they often turn up in unexpected places. Top pastry chef, Christophe Felder, who is known for his exquisite taste and the way he revolutionised the way people think of desserts, has a cookbook in which he includes a recipe for a cocktail which includes fraise tagada to give these delicious sweets an adult-friendly makeover.

Renault are also not averse to using these delicious sweets in new ways. In 2006, they decorated the entrance to their exhibition site with a pink Twingo which they covered with these delicious sweets. The project used 12,000 of these tasty treats and resulted in a mouth-watering vehicle which prompted thousands of visitors to go out seeking a sugar rush once they had had their appetites jump-started by this sweet-smelling car.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy the delicious flavour of these justifiably popular sweets, adding some strawberry bon bon syrup to a whipped cream dispenser to top a bowl of strawberries, fruit salad or any other dessert, or even as an indulgent addition to a cup of freshly brewed coffee.

This cocktail recipe gives these sweets a truly grown-up twist and is sure to delight anyone who grew up eating them.
