Pumpkin spice is, as the name suggests, anything but a passenger on the taste buds. Its a flavour combination which smacks you across the face with zest and warmth in equal measure. With these qualities considered, pumpkin spice is ideal for adding cosiness to the likes of lattes and desserts during the autumn months.
An authentic pumpkin spice taste, with nutmeg and cinnamon at the forefront, has been developed for this delicious Monin Pumpkin Spice Syrup. Combining the spiciness of the syrup with the smoothness of cream in one of our cream dispensers and whipping it up with a cream charger makes for a surprising punchy hit that can be added to hot drinks or cold desserts.
Despite being virtually unheard of only half a century ago, pumpkin spice has actually been around in some form for 3,500 years. Its origins played a part in the global spice trade, where Asia would sell the likes of nutmeg and other spice commodities to North Africa and the Middle East. This spice movement would eventually trickle down to Europe and the rest of the world, and pumpkin flavouring became a global traveller.
Yet as previously mentioned, pumpkin spice sat firmly in the background until the 20th century. In fact, it wasnt until 1936 when a mainstream mention of pumpkin spice which featured the typical blend of spices associated with the flavour first appeared as part of a pumpkin spice cakes recipe. Even then, you would only find pumpkin pie spice available in stores from the 1950s.
Distributors McCormick popularised pumpkin spice at this time, coming up with a warm, complex blend of allspice, ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon a product they still sell to this day.
The pumpkin spice craze, however, only began in modern times. This is something largely attributed to coffee giants Starbucks, who released their smash hit Pumpkin Spice Latte in 2003.
With that said, the recent rise of pumpkin spice apparently began at a New Mexico candle company. Thats right, a candle company. In 1995 they created and distributed a pumpkin spice candle. Soon after this, independent coffee shops across America likely influenced by the vibrant aroma of pumpkin spice started transferring the blend from candles to coffee.
While pumpkin spice coffee popped up everywhere and was well received, it only hit the next level after someone decided to add sugar and milk to the drink, turning it into a latte. And, well, the rest is history.
Nowadays, pumpkin spice isnt restricted to being only in mugs of coffee. It is found in everything from crisps to pasta sauce.
The flavour is also synonymous with autumn, where its warming spices are an ideal counterbalance to the seasons falling temperatures.

Along with the indulgence of chocolate as expected, the drink is enhanced with a warmth and vibrancy that pumpkin spice brings to the party. Add in a decadent yet oh so tasty topping of vanilla-infused whipped cream and other sweet treats, and you have a beverage thats too good for only autumn time. This is a year-round hug in a mug.
What you will need:
Hot chocolate (240ml)
Monin Pumpkin Spice Syrup (30ml)
Chocolate (white, milk or dark)
Fresh cream (240ml)
Whipped cream chargers
Monin Vanilla Syrup (60ml)
- First of all, place the Monin Pumpkin Spice Syrup in an appropriate mug. Tip: warm the mug by filling it with hot water beforehand (and then removing the hot water, of course), as this will help with the upcoming mixing process.
- Pick your favourite hot chocolate brand, brew up a batch, and place it in the mug. Now while this can be done in whatever way you fancy, its important to note the Monin Pumpkin Spice Syrup is being combined with the hot chocolate. With this in mind, if you dont want the drink to be too thick, ensure you make the hot chocolate a little thinner than normal. With both ingredients in the mug, gently stir to mix.
- Time to prepare the whipped cream! With your whipped cream dispenser and cream chargers ready to go, place the Monin Vanilla Syrup and fresh cream in the device. Ensure everythings secured tight including the charger and then shake the dispenser for a number of seconds to mix the flavours together with eh gas from the cream charger. With the cream now suitably whipped, garnish the hot chocolate with a generous serving.
- For those finishing touches, sprinkle a dash of nutmeg and grate some chocolate onto the whipped cream. Doing so provides a chocolatey, vibrant drink from the first sip until the last gulp.
