Background

Mango is one of the best fruits for going on a tropical taste bud adventure. Sweet and juicy, mango brings an irresistible flavour experience alongside a plethora of health benefits. Sadly, mangos do possess one disadvantage: they can be a hassle to prepare. Peeling and cutting the fruit is a step too far for some. This, however, isnt an issue with Monin Mango Syrup.

With this syrup, you can instantly add a blast of mango goodness to cocktails, frozen drinks, desserts, and more.

The History

When pinpointing the beginning of the mango story, we have to journey back over 6,000 years ago. For an illustration of the time period, the invention of the wheel had only just beaten the discovery of mangos. The cultivation of the fruit began in the Indo-Burma region, with this extensive area of Asia which starts from eastern Bangladesh, covers Chinas western Yunnan Province, most of Thailand, and ends in Vietnam providing idyllic tropical weather conditions for the mango to thrive. Mangos are particularly revered in India. Along with the Philippines and Pakistan, the mango has the distinction of being Indias national fruit.

Mangos remained enclosed in the Indo-Burma region and away from the rest of the world for about 4,000 years. At this stage, travellers would venture further afield, mangos in tow, and introduce the fruit to other countries. Yet it wasnt until 1498, when a mango trade was established by Portuguese travellers who landed in Calcutta, for the fruit to begin fully reaching the Western Hemisphere. The reason behind this is, most likely, due to the short window of viability available for planting mango seeds. Transport across a country let alone to a different continent was understandably a slow and difficult process at the time.

It took until the 19th century for mango cultivators to arrive in the US, turning up in Florida and California in the 1830s and 1880s respectively. The spread of production continued across the world, and there are now over 1,000 different mango varieties available. Although in a situation befitting of its history and standing, it is India that ranks as the biggest mango producer. Based on 2017 stats, they were responsible for almost 40% of the worlds mangos.

Recipe Idea

Mad About Mango (and Banana) Smoothie

Is your regular fruit juice just not hitting the spot? Do you want to take your fruity beverage to the next level? Perhaps even be a little naughty and include a sweet treat topping? Well its time to add this mango and banana smoothie to your culinary repertoire. The pairing of mango and banana, which is also supported by orange, delivers a refreshing, fruit-filled hit of flavour. But before that, gorge in a generous serving of banana whipped cream which sits atop the smoothie.

What you will need:

  • One mango

  • One banana

  • Orange juice (450ml)

  • Monin Mango Syrup (50ml)

  • Four ice cubes

  • Fresh cream (240ml)

  • Whipped cream dispenser

  • Cream charger

  • Monin Banana Syrup (60ml)

- Before getting down to the actual process of making the smoothie, you have to prepare the fruit. For the mango, get a sharp knife and cut down whichever side of the flat stone. Then its a case of peeling and cutting the remaining flesh into chunks. The banana is a much easier story. Simply peel and chop the banana into chunks.

- Place the mango, banana, orange juice, ice cubes, and Monin Mango Syrup into a blender. Process all of the ingredients until the mixture is thick and smooth. With the smoothie ready, place this in the fridge for now. Quick note: You can keep and consume the smoothie mixture on the day it is made.

- Its time now to produce the whipped cream topping. First of all, a whipped cream dispenser is required for this step. If you have one available, open the dispenser up and pour in both the fresh cream and Monin Banana Syrup. Close the device and ensure it is secured tight you dont want the mixture going everywhere! Place a cream charger on the device and prepare for the fun bit: shaking the dispenser like crazy for a few seconds. Doing so will not only bring both flavours together seamlessly, but also transform that fresh cream into a light, fluffy whipped cream delight.

- Take the smoothie mixture out of the fridge and pour this into a suitable glass. From the dispenser, squirt a hearty amount of whipped cream on top of the smoothie. If you need an extra citrus kick, feel free to grate some lemon zest on top.
