The History

Not only is the taste of mint distinctive, so is its history. Believed to have originated in Asia and around the Mediterranean region, mint takes its name from an ancient mythical Greek character known as Minthe. As evidence of its rich past, Egyptian tombs from 1000 BC were found to contain mint leaves.

What was mint used for during ancient times? Well it was mainly utilised for its medicinal benefits. Romans would use mint as a mouth freshener and to support digestion. Greeks added the herb to their bath for body stimulation. Medieval monks also capitalised on the medicinal properties of mint. When you consider it is rich in Vitamins A and C, and features minerals such as zinc, calcium and magnesium, they had good reason to focus on the health advantages of mint.

This, however, doesnt mean they didnt flavour their food with mint. The aforementioned Romans crafted their own sauce with mint as an ingredient, while those medieval monks also had it as part of their culinary repertoire. These days, you will find mint incorporated into an array of food items from After Eight chocolate to mint sauce for lamb.

As for frosted mint also known as poliomintha incana this is a separate species of flowering plant found within the mint family. As with standard mint, the frosted variety also has a background as a medicinal solution. The Tewa and Hopi would utilise frosted mint in an effort to treat ear problems and rheumatism.  Comanche medicine women also chewed the frosted mint leaves to sweeten the palate for other drugs. Its strong aromatic and refreshing nature also make it a great flavouring, as found with the Monin Frosted Mint Syrup.

Recipe Idea

Pancake Paradise with Chocolate, Mint and Strawberries

When you think of comfort food, pancakes should have a comfortable position near the top of the list. Its a fluffy, flat cake which is a tasty treat all by its own. Yet the flat nature of the pancake makes the perfect base for oodles of toppings. Some people stick to simply drizzling syrup on their pancakes. Well this is, quite frankly, boring. Consider the pancake your canvas to create something memorable and moreish.

If youre lacking inspiration, try out this sumptuous recipe that utilises a generous serving of rich chocolate, fresh strawberries and irresistible mint whipped cream.

What you will need:

  • Self-rising flour (300g)

  • Caster sugar (1 tbsp)

  • Baking powder (1 tsp)

  • Two eggs

  • Milk (300ml)

  • Monin Caramel Syrup (20ml)

  • Fresh cream (240ml)

  • Monin Frosted Mint Syrup (60ml)

  • Milk or dark chocolate (150g)

  • Fresh strawberries (200g)

  • Sunflower oil

  • Butter

  • Whipped cream dispenser

  • NOS cream charger

- First of all, the focus needs to be placed on making the pancakes. In a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, baking powder, eggs, and a pinch of salt. Whisk these ingredients until the batter is nice and smooth. Also during the whisking process, add the milk and Monin Caramel Syrup. This will not only help to add extra depth and flavour, but also turn the pancakes into fluffy American-style ones.

- Get a small knob of butter and a splash of oil, and place these in a non-stick frying pan. Once everythings sizzling, start adding spoonfuls of the batter. These can be whatever size you desire. Once bubbles pop up on the surface, flip the pancake over to cook the other side. If you want to make multiple pancakes, put the oven on a low heat, and place each pancake in the oven to keep them warm.

- During the process of cooking the pancakes, you should also melt the chocolate. This can be done by having a pan of simmering water, breaking the chocolate into a heatproof bowl, and sitting the bowl over the pan. Stir occasionally until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.

-  To create the mint whipped cream, you will need a whipped cream dispenser. Place the fresh cream and Monin Frosted Mint Syrup in the dispenser. Place a NOS cream charger on the cream dispenser, and then give it a hearty shake for a few seconds.

- With everything ready to go, bring the pancakes out of the oven. Put some chopped strawberries on top, pour on a generous amount of chocolate, and finally finish with a few squirts of that light, delectable mint whipped cream.
