From the tropics to the United States, Bananas are the most popular fruit in the world. So much so that bananas only sit behind rice, wheat and corn as the planet’s biggest dietary staple. In some countries, the fruit is seen as little more than a healthy snack. In various Sub-Sahara Africa areas, bananas are consumed with little else on the dietary menu. And based on Islamic tradition, the fruit is revered as the food of paradise.
While that details the current standing of the banana, what about its history? And more specifically, what’s the story behind the yellow banana variety?
Well it is believed the cultivation of bananas began in Papua New Guinea all the way back in 5000 B.C. Other reported areas where the fruit was grown include Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaya Peninsula. Fast forward to 327 B.C. and it was Alexander the Great – after he’d invaded India and sampled banana for the first time – who would go on to introduce the fruit to Europe. Yet the bananas during this time period were much different to the kind enjoyed today. The pulp wasn’t tasty, and the fruit even contained hard seeds.
The evolution towards current bananas took a big step around 650 A.D. In Africa, two wild banana varieties engaged in a spot of cross breeding, a process which resulted in some of the bananas becoming seedless. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century when further refinements led to the banana variety most common today: the Cavendish.
Named after the 6th Duke of Devonshire, William Spencer Cavendish, the Cavendish banana is the variety most often seen in retail stores today. This yellow banana is not just really tasty, but it’s also resilient – which makes it both suitable for long-distance travel and more likely to produce a successful harvest. But why is it named after Cavendish? Well the plants the Cavendish originated from reportedly began in China before finding their way to England. Several years after this, derivatives from the original plants were obtained in 1829 by Joseph Paxton, Cavendish’s gardener. He cultivated them in glasshouses, these plants eventually spread across the planet, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Ultimate Banana Smoothie
Do you love the taste of banana? Then you’ll love this easy-to-make smoothie that places the fruit right at the forefront. Not only does it supply a great tasting drink, but it’s also packed with ingredients which will give you an energy boost.
What you will need:
One ripe banana
Unsweetened almond milk (400ml)
Almond butter (2 tbsp)
Cinnamon (1 tsp)
Monin Yellow Banana Syrup (60ml)
Fresh cream (240ml)
Whipped cream dispenser
- To begin, place the banana, prunes, almond milk, cinnamon and almond butter into a blender. Mix the ingredients together until the mixture is thick and smooth in consistency. Transfer the smoothie into a suitable glass or drink container, and place in the fridge to chill.
- As the smoothie reaches the ideal temperature in the fridge, you can move on to the next element: making a banana-inspired whipped cream. Quick note: you will need a whipped cream dispenser to complete this step. With the dispenser, open this up and pour in both the fresh cream and Monin Yellow Banana Syrup. At this point, don’t forget to place a cream charger on the dispenser! With everything ready to go, shake the dispenser for a few seconds, ensuring the two ingredients suitably blend whilst also producing a fluffy whipped cream.
- Remove the smoothie mixture out of the fridge when ready. Squirt a liberal amount of the banana whipped cream on top, and you’re done! Note: if you have any leftover smoothie mix – which is highly unlikely, admittedly – this can be kept in the fridge for up to two days.
