Background

Its hard to not be passionate for a fruit which is, well, called passion fruit. Rich and refreshing, this tropical fruit isnt only popular for its taste. Passion fruit is also high in nutrients yet low on calories. With intense, aromatic and unique flavour characteristics, it is considered a natural concentrate due to how well it blends with other juices.

With the Monin Passion Fruit Syrup, you can do everything from giving a cake a fruity flavour to adding a distinctive twist to a traditional cocktail. You can even just quickly add some of that passion to whipped cream by mixing cream and syrup in a whipped cream dispenser.

The History

The exact origins of passion fruit, and the plant it is grown on, is unknown. However, the general belief is the fruit is native to Brazil. Spanish Catholics, who were based in the country during the 16th century, christened the distinctive purple plant the flower of the five wounds.

As with any quality, marketable product, passion fruit eventually began journeying around the world. In the 19th century, the fruit cropped up in Hawaii where it had a rapid rise in popularity. Sadly its growth despite being in a perfect climate couldnt be sustained due to numerous issues, including high labour costs and vines being damaged by viruses.

The latter was also responsible for passion fruits agricultural decline in Australia, although select plantations have been rebuilt just not enough to cover the countrys demand for the fruit.

Thankfully, other places have picked up the slack. In fact, South America is currently recognised as the continent that grows most of the planets passion fruit.

This trend began in the 1950s, with Colombia and Venezuela cultivating the fruit. While it was and still is widespread in those two countries, the growth and exporting of passion fruit to the West is largely down to Ecuador these days.

Speaking of today, how popular is passion fruit? In the UK, it has yet to take off as a trendy fruit. The likes of apples, grapes and bananas overshadow passion fruit sales.

Its a similar situation in the USA (Hawaii notwithstanding). In its presumed birthplace of Brazil, however, residents cannot get enough of the tropical treat. Despite growing most of their own fruit, Brazil actually has to import additional supplies of passion fruit due to the demand. Along with consumers enjoying the fruit in its natural form, Brazils passion fruit craze extends to it being used in fresh beverages which are sold at juice stands across the country.

Easy Passion Fruit and Coconut Cupcakes

Fresh, fruity and fuss-free these cupcakes are ideal for birthday parties or as a cheeky sweet treat at home. Thanks to their basic nature only eight ingredients are needed they are also a great starting point for beginner chefs. Although dont let their simplicity fool you. The coconut-infused cupcakes are a light delight, and the passion fruit whipped cream topping ties everything together into one small yet scrumptious package.

What you will need:

  • Butter (175g)

  • Caster sugar (175g)

  • Self-rising flour (175g)

  • Baking powder (1/2 teaspoon)

  • Three large eggs

  • Coconut extract (1/2 teaspoon)

  • Fresh cream (240ml)

  • Cream Chargers

  • Whipped cream dispenser

  • Monin Passion Fruit Syrup (60ml)

Instructions:

- Before getting down to business, preheat your oven to gas mark 4/180°C. Also get a muffin tin and line it with 12 cupcake wrappers/muffin cases.

- Place the butter, caster sugar, self-rising flour, baking powder, eggs, and coconut extract in a large bowl. With everything ready, grab a wooden spoon or electric whisk, and stir everything up until the mixture is even and smooth. Then its a case of evenly distributing this mixture between the cupcake wrappers.

- With the cupcake mixture ready to bake, stick them in the hot oven. The recommended oven time is 20-25 minutes, yet this can be reduced or increased. The main thing is you want the cakes to have risen well and have a firm top. Once theyre ready, remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack.

- As the cakes are cooling, its time to focus on the whipped cream. In your whipped cream dispenser, place the Monin Passion Fruit Syrup and fresh cream. Ensure the dispenser cap is secured tight and screw in a charger. You will hear the gas escaping from the cream chargers when you tighten it down. Then shake the device for a number of seconds, where it will not only blend the two flavours seamlessly, but also helps to speed up dissolving the gas from the cream chargers to produce a light and delicious whipped cream.

- Now comes the fun part: bringing both of your food creations together. With the cupcakes suitably cooled down, use the dispenser to garnish them generously with the whipped cream. Thats it. It really is that simple. And mouth-wateringly tasty!
